I started using sunscreen regularly a year or so ago. I had started a new skincare regimen and wanted to start really addressing aging. This year I started tretinoin (generic for Retin A) and realized that I needed to step up my sunscreen to prevent photoaging. You can learn more about tretinoin here and here. I tried several different sunscreens searching for one that would not make my face greasy, would not leave a white cast to my face, and that my makeup would apply well over the sunscreen. You can read my thoughts on the others that I tried here, here, here, and here. Yes, I tried a bunch in my search for the perfect sunscreen for me.
This particular sunscreen was recommended to me by the esthetician at my dermatologist’s office. She suggested it because it helps control oil. Oil-free EltaMD UV Clear helps calm and protect sensitive skin types prone to breakouts, rosacea and discoloration. It contains niacinamide (vitamin B3), hyaluronic acid and lactic acid, ingredients that promote the appearance of healthy-looking skin. Very lightweight and silky, it may be worn with makeup or alone. Also:
- 9.0% transparent zinc oxide
- Antioxidant protection combats skin-aging free radicals associated with ultraviolet (UV) and infrared radiation (IR).
- Calms and protects acne-prone skin
- Leaves no residue
- UVA/UVB sun protection
- Fragrance-free, oil-free, paraben-free, sensitivity-free and noncomedogenic

I have been using this sunscreen almost daily since I got it in mid-July. The picture above is to give you an idea of how it wears under makeup. I am using the same foundation and powder that I used with all the sunscreens I tested. I am using Cover Girl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation and Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder. This foundation, powder, and sunscreen are all featured in 5 Faves in July. It works really well under makeup and does not make my face look white at all.
This is my current favorite sunscreen. It goes on like a tinted moisturizer and dries to a satin-ish finish. My makeup blends well over it and it does not make my face greasy or shiny. It doesn’t feel like a sunscreen at all. It is so light and absorbs so easily that it doesn’t feel like much of anything going on.
This feels the best and does a decent job of protecting your skin from the sun. However, it lacks the full spectrum coverage that the Nivea sunscreen has. Read My Take on Sunscreen: Nivea Sun Protect Super Water Gel SPF 50/PA+++. The Nivea is a bit shinier than the Elta MD and is not as easily absorbed. There are a few others I still want to try but for now, this Elta MD is my favorite with the Nivea being a close second.
