Summer Go-To Products to Combat Shine

I have normal/combo skin that varies wildly with the seasons. In the winter it is normal with some dryness and I use heavier products to moisturize my skin. The summer is a different story. After a few hours, my face is shiny looking. If I use richer products they cause excess shine or break me out. I basically change up my skincare and makeup come summer.

My skincare routine has to be changed up as it gets warmer. I switch to a stronger toner than Dickinson’s Enhanced Witch Hazel Hydrating Toner. I still use it at night but I use Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2 in the morningDermatologist-developed formula helps reveal fresher skin. Sweeps away dulling flakes and excess oil so moisturizer can do its job better. Helps fine dry lines disappear. In the winter this is just too drying but it works in warm weather. I was able to use it year round before I started using tretinoin.

My summer morning moisturizer is Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel.  Dermatologist-developed formula combines oil-free hydration with skin-strengthening ingredients. Mere words cannot express my love for this moisturizer. It is a Holy Grail product for me. It feels cooling going on and is immediately absorbed. It is incredibly hydrating without being heavy or greasy feeling. It is perfect for my combo summer skin.

You may see a theme emerging here when I say that my go-to summer foundation is Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup. Tested for streaking and fading at 88°F with a constant 80% humidity, all to prove Stay-Matte stays fresh. At the same time, this patent-pending formula absorbs shine, controls oil, resists sweat. And you stay matte all day. This is the best foundation I have ever used to keep my face matte in the heat and humidity. It is simply amazing.  My skin looks muddy and greasy by the end of the day with basically any other foundation. If you battle shine in the summer you need this foundation. And at $24 a tube, it isn’t terribly expensive.

Finally, Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder is my go-to summer powder. Up to 5 hours natural shine control with natural minerals. Helps minimize the appearance of pores. There is a reason this is a cult fave. It works. And it actually does minimize my pores. It isn’t heavy or cakey. The finish is almost porcelain. The best part is that it is less than $4!

As you can see, I rely heavily on Clinique products in the summer. They do such a great job of keeping my skin looking it’s best in hot, humid weather. I never expected to be battling shine at 53 and post-menopausal but I am. Luckily, I have found the products that work for me.

I do continue to use heavier products at night. I need anti-aging benefits and extra hydration at my age. I use more clay and mud-based masks in the summer and cut back some on sheet masks.

Do you battle shine in the summer? Do you use any of the products I have mentioned? Do they work for you? Have you found others that work better?
