Since I started using Tretinoin (Retin A) almost 2 years ago I have been trying out sunscreens to see which works best for me. When you use tretinoin it is imperative that you use sunscreen. Every. Single. Day. Honestly, if you want to avoid photoaging you should be using it daily anyway.
It is hard to find a good sunscreen for the face. I want one that does not make me look shiny or greasy. I don’t want my face to have that ghastly white cast either. I need one that works well with both my skincare products and my makeup. I hate when it causes pilling and makeup sliding around.
I am a fan of Clinique makeup and skincare.Clinique foundations and blushes are my favorites. I love their moisturizers too. It isn’t surprising that I decided to try a subscreen from one of my favorite brands.
On the Clinique website it has this to say about Clinique Super City Block:
High-level daily sunscreen in a sheer, weightless formula. Protects against sun and environmental damage with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sun block and antioxidants. For all skins, even the most sensitive. Wear alone or as an invisible makeup primer.
Active Ingredients: Octinoxate 7.50%, Octisalate 2.00%, Titanium Dioxide 5.20%, Zinc Oxide 6.00%. Inactive Ingredients: Water\Aqua\Eau, Butylene Glycol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Cetyl Alcohol, Laureth-4, PEG-100 Stearate, Rosa Roxburghii Fruit Extract, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract, Porphyra Yezoensis (Algae) Extract, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Hordeum Vulgare (Barley) Extract\Extrait D’orge, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake, Gentiana Lutea (Gentian) Root Extract, Salicornia Herbacea Extract, Plankton Extract, Polyglyceryl-3 Beeswax, Yeast Extract\Faex\Extrait De Levure, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Pantethine , PVP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Acetyl Glucosamine, Propylene Glycol Dicaprate, Caprylyl Glycol, Polyethylene, Caffeine, Isohexadecane, Methicone, Nylon-12, Zeolite, Lecithin, Polysorbate 80, Acrylamide/Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate Copolymer, Isostearic Acid, Calcium Chloride, Alumina, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Hexylene Glycol, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Phenoxyethanol, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499).
It has some really nice, natural ingredients. There is no scent that I can smell. The sunscreen is a mousse-like lotion with a tint. Tinted sunscreen doesn’t usually leave a white cast and this one doesn’t. It does take a bit of work to get it to massage into the skin and disappear. I have to be especially careful around my eyes and nose or it will look patchy.
It does not leave my face looking shiny or greasy. It dries down to a matte finish that is actually more dry than oily. It doesn’t pill or ball when applied over my other skincare products. My makeup goes over it very smoothly and there is no shine as the day wears on.
Clinique Super City Block Oil-Free Daily Face Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 40 certainly meets my requirement of not leaving a white cast and of working well with all my other products. It is very good in both categories.
And yet I don’t love it. It just feels too heavy and is so hard to massage into my face. I am used to gel Asian formulas that absorb so much more easily and feel so much lighter on the skin. Nivea Sun Protect Super Water Gel SPF 50/PA+++, Tommy Bahama Natural Vanilla SPF 30 Mineral Face Tinted Sunscreen Lotion By Coola, and Elta MD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 Tinted are my favorites so far.
I don’t hate this by any means but I don’t see repurchasing anytime soon. I like a light sunscreen that absorbs quickly. I will continue to try sunscreens in search of the best one for me, I plan on looking at something from Biore next.
What is your favorite sunscreen? Have you tried this Clinique subscreen? Did you like it?
